This is how many drivers feel when they begin shopping for a new vehicle, especially one from a manufacturer as legendary as Chevrolet. This is also especially true regarding Chevy’s family of available SUVs, which is one of, if not the most diversified selections of SUVs you’ll find on the market.
The 2023 model year featured the return of all the major hitters in Chevy’s SUV lineup, with one exception: the Trax was placed on a brief hiatus as it underwent a redesign for the 2024 model year. Because of the Trax’s absence, seven SUVs compose Chevy’s 2023 lineup, so it’s not hard to believe that some drivers have no clue where to start. The seven Chevy SUVs for the 2023 model year are all established models, including some storied vehicles like the Suburban and Tahoe, along with more recent additions like the Bolt EUV, which first launched a few years back. Here at Newton Chevrolet GMC, we want to take the time to explain Chevy’s 2023 SUV lineup to you, so when you visit our dealership for your SUV, you should have an idea of where to start.
Chevy Trailblazer
Who should purchase the Chevy Trailblazer? The Chevy Trailblazer is a subcompact SUV with incredible fuel efficiency thanks to its two turbocharged engine options. It’s great for drivers who want something well-equipped at a low price. The 2023 Chevy Trailblazer starts at just $22,100, which means it’s the lowest-priced 2023 Chevy SUV.[a] Normally, the status as Chevy’s most cost-effective SUV is reserved for the Trax. However, as we mentioned earlier, there’s no 2023 Trax, so the Trailblazer is currently the value king.
The 2023 Chevy Trailblazer can be fitted with either a turbocharged 1.2L engine or a turbocharged 1.3L engine, and the latter can be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission if you aren’t interested in a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT.) The 2023 Trailblazer is fuel-efficient no matter what, rated for 29 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway with the base engine. The upgraded I-3 engine is actually even more efficient, rated for up to 33 MPG on the highway. With your 2023 Trailblazer, you’ll enjoy either a seven-inch or an eight-inch infotainment center with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and you’ll also get a modest yet entirely sufficient 54.4 cu.ft. of total cargo space, reduced to 25.3 cu.ft. if the back seats are kept upright.
Chevy Equinox
The Chevy Equinox is the most popular SUV in Chevy’s lineup. The 2023 Equinox starts at $26,600, and with that modest price increase over the Trailblazer, the Equinox takes things to the next level in a few different ways.[a] A turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the 2023 Equinox. This helps the Equinox achieve 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, along with stellar EPA-estimated ratings of 26 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway.
The 2023 Equinox is a wonderful blend of performance and efficiency for the price, and like Chevy’s other SUVs, the Equinox comes with a wealth of standard driver-assist features thanks to Chevy Safety Assist. The standard infotainment center comes with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an optional 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Because the Equinox is a compact SUV, it’s larger than the subcompact Trailblazer and Bolt EUV, allowing it to provide up to 63.9 cu.ft. of cargo space with the rear seats folded.
Chevy Blazer
The Chevy Blazer does everything necessary to justify its hefty price jump over SUVs like the Equinox. The 2023 Blazer starts at $35,100, and on top of its sleeker design, it enhances the experience tenfold in numerous categories.[a] For starters, the Blazer is stronger and more technologically sound, with a host of modern tech that lays the groundwork for the vehicle’s advanced underpinnings. The 2023 Blazer offers several tech features not available in the smaller Chevy SUVs, including a more modern infotainment center with a 10.2-inch screen, standard Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad for smartphones to accompany the other tetherless features.
As a midsize SUV, the cargo space in the 2023 Blazer is more than adequate, with up to 64.2 cu.ft. of room available behind the first row of seats. The true upgrade of the Blazer comes in the form of its two powertrains: a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 and a 3.6L V6 engine. The base 2.0L engine provides 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the V6 will give you 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, and you’ll also have a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 lbs.
Chevy Traverse
The Chevy Traverse is a fantastic alternative to similarly-priced models like the Blazer. The 2023 Traverse starts at $34,520, and while it lacks some of the more premium tech features, such as the Blazer’s more advanced infotainment center, the Traverse still comes with amenities like Chevy Safety Assist.[a] However, the main draw of this model is its three rows of seating. Large families and car-poolers alike should consider a three-row SUV, especially one like the Traverse, which has above-average performance and interior room.
The 2023 Traverse comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine producing 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, giving it similar power as the Blazer’s optional engine. However, the Traverse is a larger vehicle, giving it a higher maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. Inside the Traverse, the cargo space is equally impressive, with 23 cu.ft. available in the trunk. That increases to 57.8 cu.ft. and then 98.2 cu.ft. as you fold down the rear rows of seats.
Chevy Tahoe
Chevrolet has two full-size SUVs for 2023, starting with the slightly smaller Tahoe at $54,200.[a] The 2023 Tahoe can be fitted with a turbo-diesel engine if you’d prefer, but the base V8 engine can tow a maximum of 8,400 lbs––the most of any Chevy SUV. The Tahoe has the same powertrain options as its pricier counterpart, the Suburban, along with an identical infotainment setup consisting of a standard eight-inch screen and an available 10.2-inch display.
The Chevy Tahoe is the second-largest SUV in Chevy’s lineup, which means you have plenty of cargo space. Folding down both rows of back seats gives you an impressive 122.9 cu.ft. to enjoy, but if you need to keep the second row up, you’ll still have 72.6 cu.ft. Even with all three rows of seats occupied, the Tahoe will still give you 25.5 cu.ft. of space.
Chevy Suburban
The Suburban is Chevy’s largest and most premium. The 2023 Suburban starts at an MSRP of $56,900 and is an incredible showing in performance, spaciousness, and reliability.[a] The Suburban sports the same three powertrains as the Tahoe, as we’ve mentioned, and it performs identically, except its larger size means it has 100 lbs less towing with its V8 engines and 200 lbs less with its diesel option. However, the Suburban is an indisputable champion of cargo space.
Even if you’re driving with eight passengers, you’ll still have an astonishing 41.5 cu.ft. of space in the trunk for not only your belongings but everyone else’s too. There’s room for everything. Even if you fold down the third row, you’ll have a cavernous 93.8 cu.ft. of cargo space. The real star of the show is folding down both back rows, as doing this gives you a 144.7 cu.ft. of cargo space, which is simply incredible.
Chevy Bolt EUV
The Chevy Bolt EUV is Chevy’s first electric SUV. Although the Bolt EUV is similar to the Bolt EV––Chevy’s first electric vehicle––in many ways, the Bolt EUV joined the lineup with the 2021 model. The Bolt EUV brings the best parts of the Bolt EV to the SUV space, including its fully-electric powertrain that generates 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. With the 2023 Bolt EUV, you can travel an estimated 247 miles on a full charge, which is only slightly less than the smaller 2023 Bolt EV.
The Bolt EUV was one of Chevy’s first vehicles to feature Super Cruise––a hands-free driving feature that allows drivers to relinquish the steering, acceleration, and braking to the vehicle on hundreds of thousands of miles of pre-mapped highways across North America. Despite being a subcompact model, the Bolt EUV has a good amount of cargo space, with 16.3 cu.ft. of room when the backseats are up or a total of 56.9 cu.ft. with the rear seats folded down.
