Described as a large family SUV on Chevy’s website, the 2022 Chevy Suburban recently received a completed redesign and is now one of the most luxurious family vehicles on the road today. Family travel may never be the same, thanks to a plethora of high-end comfort and convenience features designed to keep everyone happy while on the go.

Whether you’ve got a day of in-town errands ahead of you, or the family is kicking off a long weekend in the mountains, the Suburban has the cargo space and amenities to level up your road game. Six trims adorn the Suburban lineup for 2022, making it easy for buyers to find the perfect blend of price and features. Beginning with the well-equipped base LS all the way up to the ultra-luxurious High Country, there’s a trim for just about every large SUV buyer.

Last model year’s redesign included a complete overhaul of the Suburban’s interior. It’s more spacious than previous generations, both for cargo and up to 8 passengers, and the generous assortment of infotainment and comfort goodies exceeds expectations. How does a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen sound? The kids will love the available dual-screen rear entertainment system, and mom and dad will appreciate Chevy’s array of standard driver-assist systems.

In some ways, it’s easier to talk about what you can’t find on the Suburban, such as an inflated price tag or inferior towing capability. This powerful SUV continues its reign as the segment’s best and most practical choice. Jaw-dropping specs include up to 145 cubic feet of cargo space and up to 8,300 pounds of towing capability, making it nearly as capable as a full-size pickup truck. If you’re in the market for a new large SUV, the Suburban remains your number one option by a landslide.

  • Trims

For 2022, Chevy offers the iconic Suburban in six different trims: the base LS, the LT, the RST, the off-road-focused Z71, the Premier, and the luxurious top-of-the-line High Country. Discovering which Suburban works for you is as easy as comparing each trim’s specifications. Do you want plenty of trail riding capability? Is high-end luxury your goal? There’s no shortage of choice among the six trims Chevy offers. Even the base LS offers plenty of standard equipment.

    The LS

Speaking of the LS, the 2022 Suburban’s story starts here. The LS features your choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, along with a powerful 5.3-liter V8 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. A set of 18-inch wheels are standard, along with all-season tires. Running boards make entry easy, and roof-mounted side rails are ready to handle extra cargo. LED headlights/taillights are standard, along with standard automatic IntelliBeam high beams. Inside, the LS includes a 6-speaker audio system, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, and power front seats. A keyless start is standard, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and seating for eight passengers.

    The LT

If you seek a few more cabin appointments, check out the Suburban LT. It receives a giant 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen that runs on Chevy’s Infotainment 3 Premium operating system for lightning-fast touch response and intuitive menu-based features. A 12-inch driver information center is also standard, displaying key driving data like speed, driving range, and more. An upgraded 9-speaker Bose audio system also joins the list of standard premium features.

    The RST

The RST adds 22-inch tires and wheels, perforated leather seating with heated front seats, and trim specific monochrome black exterior finishes, including an all-black grille and RST badging. Chevy also adds a standard power liftgate to the RST’s impressive list of included features. Most importantly, buyers choosing the RST can upgrade to either a larger 6.2-liter V8 engine or a Duramax turbo-diesel V6.

    The Premier and High Country

On the upper end of the trim range sits the dynamic duo: the Premier and the High Country. Premier buyers receive Magnetic Ride Control for smoother, more aerodynamic performance, along with heated, auto-dimming power mirrors, a 10-speaker Bose sound system with surround sound and CenterPoint audio technology, power second-row bucket seats, and a power third-row bench seat. An innovative power-sliding center console is also standard.

The High Country makes the 6.2-liter V8 standard and includes a set of 22-inch sterling silver painted wheels. An HD Surround Vision 360-degree camera is standard, too, as is a head-up display. Add the optional High Country Deluxe package, and you’ll get Adaptive Cruise Control, a power panoramic sunroof, and power running boards with additional perimeter lighting. A rear camera mirror and washer are also included on the High Country.

What Can the Available Engines Do?

Chevy’s impressive lineup of Suburban engines starts with the 5.3-liter V8, which is standard on the LS, the LT, and the Premier. It produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, plenty of power for brisk acceleration and substantial towing and hauling capability. A 10-speed automatic transmission helps for smooth shifting and a healthy amount of low-range torque, which means getting up to highway speeds is effortless.

If you need something a little meatier, consider the 6.2-liter V8 engine, a powerhouse that’s included with the High Country and RST trims and available on the Z71 and the Premier. Performance specs catapult to 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It relies on the same dynamic 10-speed transmission to deliver a dynamic power range in every gear without a disastrous decline in fuel economy.

Perhaps most exciting of all is the addition of a durable diesel engine, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel six-cylinder. This engine puts the spotlight on torque, offering a whopping 460 lb-ft of it, along with 277 horsepower. The Duramax is a truck engine that’s designed to optimize both performance and fuel efficiency, offering 21 MPG of fuel economy in the city and 27 MPG on the highway. The driving range is equally impressive at up to 726 miles.

    Aspects That Boost Driving Performance

In short, these three engines offer more variety than you’ll find on any other SUV. Performance extras like the available Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension enhance handling characteristics even more. The first of its class adaptive suspension continuously monitors ride height and suspension characteristics to optimize performance and comfort. The suspension can even automatically lower once the vehicle is parked for easy egress. Z71 and High Country trim buyers can add the air suspension as optional equipment.

The Off-Roading Ability of the Z71

Available only in four-wheel drive, the off-road-ready Suburban Z71 is unique in the lineup for many reasons. It’s the only trim with a standard 2-speed transfer case and a heavy-duty air filter designed to help your Suburban weather off-roading conditions. Hill Descent Control is also standard and works by automatically using anti lock braking to control your descent without you ever having to touch the brakes. The Z71 features bright red tow hooks in the front grille and 20-inch all-terrain tires.

The Z71 also has a unique front fascia application with a high approach angle. Add the optional Off-Road Capability Package, and you’ll get Magnetic Ride Control, an Electronic Limited-Slip Differential, and the first-of-its-kind Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. The Off-Road Performance Package outfits the Suburban Z71 with the larger 6.2-Liter V8 and a dual exhaust with stainless steel exhaust tips.

Infotainment Technology You'll Be Happy to Have

The Suburban is family-ready with a series of screens and technology that provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. To truly appreciate the 2022 Suburban’s plethora of technology, all it takes is a closer look at the top-end High Country trim. Here you’ll find a 10.2-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and compatibility with Google voice and Alexa.

What does it mean when Google is built-in? It means you get access to Google Assistant, an intelligent voice recognition system that responds to a variety of commands, helping you call friends and family hands-free, and even adjust the cabin temperature without ever taking your eyes off the road. You’ll also get all the might of Google Maps for seamless turn-by-turn navigation with real-time traffic updates and automatic rerouting.

The kids will love the optional dual 12.6-inch screen rear entertainment system and the multitude of USB charging ports scattered throughout the Suburban’s cabin. The driver will appreciate the High Country’s 15-inch color head-up display. It projects navigation prompts, incoming calls, and even the speed limit right on the windshield at eye level. Equally impressive are the 13 different camera views available to help with everything from parallel parking to hooking up a trailer.

    Towing Technology

Speaking of towing, the Suburban’s Advanced Trailering System offers multiple views for easy hook-up and safe trailer operation. The app-based system lets drivers customize trailer profiles and work through pre-departure checklists. It also monitors trailer tire pressure and tire temperature to keep you and your cargo safe. Camera views include a Transparent trailer view, which lets you see behind the trailer while you’re moving, so you always know what’s coming.

    Safety Tech

Chevy Safety Assist, the automaker’s class-leading suite of driver-assist safety systems, comes standard on all Suburban trims. It includes six systems – Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam Automatic High Beams. Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alerts, and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert are also available and even standard on certain Suburban trims.
