Starting at
Winner of the coveted Car and Driver Editors' Choice Award, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe offers a trio of available engines with enough power to pull its weight and have plenty leftover for hauling a trailer. The standard 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 is the most fuel-efficient, delivering 16 MPG city and 20 MPG highway. The engine also features start/stop technology, which also contributes to its respectable fuel economy ratings. The 5.3 liter's torque rating sits at 383 lb-ft.
The optional 6.2-liter V8 (standard on the Tahoe High Country trim) boosts horsepower to 420 and torque to 460 lb-ft. Vehicles equipped with the larger engine still achieve a 20 MPG highway fuel economy rating, but city ratings dip slightly to 15 MPG. Both the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines are EcoTec3 designs, which are more lightweight and fuel-efficient.
If fuel efficiency is your main goal, opt for the available Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel engine with automatic stop/start. With an estimated 28 MPG highway, this is the most fuel-efficient engine for the 2021 Chevy Tahoe. Even with its optimal fuel economy, the Turbo-Diesel packs a punch, offering 460 lb-ft of torque for plenty of low-end power. The diesel is available on LS, LT, RST, Premier, and High Country trims.
All Tahoe models, regardless of engine, have been updated to include a 10-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifting at all speeds. Also new for 2021, the Tahoe now includes independent rear suspension, which achieves two big benefits: first, it creates more space in the cabin thanks to more efficient architecture, and second, it smooths out the bumps over any terrain. Add the optional Magnetic Ride Control, and the Tahoe delivers a smooth, steady ride.
For 2021, Chevy also offers a Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension - the first of its kind in the segment - that can raise or lower up to four inches, improving aerodynamics at highway speeds when lowered and increasing ground clearance during off-roading activities when raised. The system also offers automatic load leveling for consistent ride and handling.
The Tahoe comes in six trims for the 2021 model year, each offering its own list of features and benefits. Buyers looking on the value end of the range should check out the LS. Starting at just under $50,000, the LS is not a typical base model. Features include a standard Premium Smooth Ride suspension for comfortable driving on any terrain, 18-inch wheels, and a roof rack luggage carrier.
Upgrade to the Tahoe LT, and the cabin gets a 9-speaker Bose audio system, wireless charging pad, and an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror. Busy families will love the standard programmable, hands-free liftgate for easy cargo loading. The LT also comes standard with heated 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, as well as keyless entry and push-button start. Rear park assist is also standard, along with several driver-assist safety systems, including forward collision warning.
The sporty RST is designed for a little more street presence. Gone are the chrome grille surround and side accents present on the other Tahoe trims; instead, the RST stands out with its monotone black exterior, special RST badging, all-black grille, and 22-inch wheels. The theme continues in the cabin, with a dramatic jet black interior and trim-specific red seat stitching. The Tahoe RST also includes a standard limited-slip differential and is available in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
If off-roading is in your plans, opt for the Tahoe Z71. All Chevy trucks and SUVs with the Z71 name are specifically designed for extra trail riding capability. The Z71 includes bright red tow hooks, a front skid plate, special black side steps for easy cabin entry, and an optional Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. The Z71 is only available with a four-wheel drive powertrain, so it also comes standard with a two-speed transfer case. All Z71 models are further equipped with all-terrain tires for off-road adventures.
The upscale 2021 Tahoe Premier includes a standard 10-speaker surround-sound Bose audio system, an enhanced suite of driver-assist safety systems, including lane change alert with side blind zone alert and front and rear park assist. The Premier also includes Magnetic Ride Control, which monitors the wheels and suspension, adjusting traction and suspension characteristics to deliver the best possible ride handling.
The top-of-the-line High Country reaches up to the $70,000 range and includes as standard the larger 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine, Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, Magnetic Ride Control, an upgraded front grille, and special 22-inch wheels with all-season tires. The High Country also includes HD Surround Vision, a series of cameras that provide multiple exterior views, including an overhead image of the area around the vehicle.
All Tahoe trims come standard with a giant 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen that's prominently featured on the dash. The infotainment is powered by Chevy's 3 Plus system, and the upper-level trims include integrated navigation. There's also a 15-inch Head-Up Display, standard on the High Country and available as an option on the Premier, as well as an 8-inch multi-color Driver Information Center included on the two highest trims.
The Tahoe High Country offers a standard HD Surround Vision camera system, which uses several different cameras to offer nine different views – including a bird's eye perspective – to display images of the areas immediately surrounding the vehicle. The system is designed to help with everything from backing out of a parking spot to assisting in navigating tight spots. Combined with the available front and rear park assist, handling the Tahoe in confined areas becomes a piece of cake.
Your lucky back seat passengers will love the available Rear Seat Media System. The system includes two 12.6-inch touch screens that are mounted on the front setbacks, as well as HDMI and USB inputs. The system also includes a power outlet where you can easily connect Amazon Fire, Roku, or AppleTV sticks for streaming on the go. Each screen can display its own content, share content between the screens, and transfer content to the driver's touchscreen.
