  • Overview

A tan 2021 Chevy Colorado Z71 is angled left.

The universe of available pickup trucks just grew for the better with the new refreshed 2021 Chevy Colorado. Chevrolet’s midsize pickup is sized just right for tough jobs without all the extra bulk where it isn’t needed. Chevy’s foray into the midsize pickup category isn’t new - the company has had midsize Colorado trucks before - but this newest refresh adds head turning updated styling to the list of reasons you should put one in your driveway.

With a base sticker price of only $25,200, the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado is also affordable, which is part of the reason Chevy brought back a midsize pickup offering in the first place. Not every buyer wants to spend north of $50,000 for a truck, yet they still want all the utility and capability a pickup truck offers. That’s what we love about the Colorado. Chevy describes the Colorado as a “midsize truck approaching full-size capability,” and we think that’s a perfect way to explain how the Colorado fits in Chevy’s truck lineup. There are plenty of powertrain options and a handful of truly luxurious interior additions that will turn the cabin into a driver’s oasis.

Trims like the beefy ZR2 Bison put off-roading at the forefront, with special differentials and other equipment designed for adventure. In fact, the Colorado looks great with a little mud splatter. Even at the base level, the 2021 Colorado exudes good looks and capability. Choose a two-door or four-door body style, select an engine and your trim level, and you’re prepared for all the hard work or trail riding adventure you can handle. Newton Chevy GMC stocks a large selection of 2021 Colorado trucks, all ready for you to test drive and explore.

  • Trims

A gray 2021 Chevy Colorado is shown from the front, parked in front of a brick building.

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado is available in four different trim levels, and within those trims, there are several customization packages offered that can outfit your Colorado with luxury appointments, extra off-roading prowess, or both. Chevy built out the Colorado trim range to give midsize truck buyers of all budgets access to a well-appointed truck that doesn’t break the bank.

    The WT and LT

Starting with the base WT, the Colorado starts at just $25,300 and is available with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The Colorado WT comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and buyers can upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 engine for a little more power. The WT is available in three body styles: an extended cab with a long box, a crew cab with a small box, and a crew cab with a long box.

The Colorado LT, at an MSRP of $27,700, adds a larger 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 6-way power driver’s seat, and an EZ Lift & Lower tailgate, which raises and lowers with less effort thanks to the addition of a torsion bar. This tailgate also has a remote locking feature, so it locks when the keyless fob is used to lock the truck’s doors. Chevy further adds body-color door handles, outside mirrors, and rear bumper for a more uniform exterior curb appeal. The LT is available in the same three cab and box configurations as the WT.

    The Z71 and ZR2

Next up, the Colorado Z71, at $35,500, adds a nice selection of standard off-roading equipment. This includes a special Z71 Off-Road Suspension Package, an automatic locking rear differential for help with traction during challenging trail conditions, all-terrain tires, and an HD rear vision camera. Chevy’s 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard, and it’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

At the top of the lineup is the Colorado ZR2. This trim starts at $41,600 and is only available with four-wheel drive. It adds an off-road appearance package, a special ZR2 off-road suspension, improved ground clearance, and a Multimatic DSSV Damping System. This last feature includes specially-made shocks that smooth out the Colorado’s ride through the use of spool valves in place of traditional shim dampers. The ZR2 is also available with a 2.8-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine.

  • Capability

A red and black 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is shown from a high angle, off-roading in the woods.

Because the Colorado’s trim range is so vast, we’ll take a look at capability from the top down to really showcase what this midsize pickup can do. The Colorado ZR2 Bison, a special trim-within-a-trim on the high-end ZR2, is the result of a partnership with American Expedition Vehicles. This Colorado version is primed for serious off-roading, with heavy-duty skid plates, unique fender flares, and 17-inch wheels, all designed for heavy use. If your goal is to conquer the road less traveled, the Bison is your ticket.

    Trailering and Payload

Overall, the Colorado truck lineup is highly capable in normal driving situations as well as off-roading. When it comes to work, the Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds and can haul a max payload of 1,550 pounds, making it a great job site option when a full-size truck is overkill. All that capability doesn’t dampen fuel economy either: the Colorado can achieve a fuel economy rating of up to 20 MPG city and 30 MPG highway when properly equipped.

    A Choice of Engines

Three engines make up the powertrain offerings across the Colorado lineup. These engines are powerful and capable, designed to deliver performance when it’s needed. Starting with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, standard on the WT and LT, Chevy goes for fuel economy and output. The 2.5-liter engine delivers 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, which translates into 3,500 pounds of towing capability and a gas-sipping 19 MPG city and 25 MPG highway.

The available 3.6-liter Dual Overhead Cam V6 engine ups the horsepower to 308 and puts out 275 lb-ft of torque. This engine is optional on the lower end of the trim range and standard on the ZR1 and ZR2 trims. With up to 7,000 pounds of towing capability, there’s plenty of power available for hauling a boat or small RV.

Diesel lovers rejoice! The popular Duramax 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine is available as an option on all but the base WT trim. This powerful, reliable motor creates 369 lb-ft of torque and pumps out 181 horsepower. That’s plenty of low-end power for a best-in-class max towing capability of 7,700 pounds while still delivering impressive fuel economy.

  • Technology

The front seats and dash are shown from the passenger side on a 2021 Chevy Colorado.

The 2021 Chevy Colorado is equipped with plenty of tech to keep you connected and entertained during a long workday. The standard 7-inch infotainment touchscreen is a control hub for connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. The Colorado is also offered with a handy 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot that keeps everyone connected. Add a wireless charging station and a handful of strategically-located USB charging ports, and no one will have to worry about dead phone batteries.

    Connectivity Wherever You Go

Chevy has partnered with Amazon to bring Alexa compatibility on board too. Alexa lets you stream playlists, connect with all your smart home devices while in your Colorado, and even create an Amazon shopping list, all from the comfort of your truck. These convenience and entertainment features give Colorado buyers plenty of ways to stay connected on the go.

Chevy’s central app-based control center, the myChevrolet system, converts your smartphone into a remote key and diagnostics center. Remotely lock and unlock your truck, start the engine, or sound the horn, all from your connected smartphone. The myChevrolet app can also locate your truck (very handy when you forgot where you parked at the airport) and check basic diagnostics, like fuel level and tire pressure.
