However, if you want to unlock the highest towing capacity available, you’ll want to upgrade to the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine. This engine is also available on both the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD and brings the output up to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both trucks also come standard with the Trailering Package and features like an automatic locking rear differential to help maintain optimal traction in sticky situations.

Maximum Capacities

While the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD have the same powertrain options available, they differ significantly when it comes to their towing and payload capacities. The Sierra 2500 HD is a three-quarter-ton truck, while the Sierra 3500 HD is a one-ton model, and that makes a big difference when it comes to how much weight they can tow and haul. This is probably the main thing that will determine which truck you go with, so let’s dig into the specifics.

The Sierra 2500 HD is a proper beast, and its stats are impressive by any standard. The 2024 model can carry a payload of up to 3,759 lbs and can tow up to 22,500 lbs. But while the Sierra 2500 HD can handle some serious work, it pales in comparison to the capable Sierra 3500 HD, which has a max payload of 7,290 lbs and can tow up to 36,000 lbs. This difference is because of the reinforced suspension and available dual-rear-wheel configuration of the Sierra 3500 HD.

Price and Value

You’ve probably already guessed that those higher stats come with a higher price tag. How much more expensive is the Sierra 3500 HD than the Sierra 2500 HD? It depends on the trim level and configuration you’re looking at, but overall, the one-ton model commands about a $1,200 premium over the three-quarter-ton version. Upgrading to a dual-rear-wheel Sierra 3500 HD doubles the price difference.

That difference in price won’t be a dealbreaker if you really need the extra-high stats that the Sierra 3500 HD brings to the table. But it’s probably enough to make drivers who are on the fence think twice before choosing the Sierra 3500 HD. If the Sierra 2500 HD is capable enough for your needs, then it’s sure to be a better value. And while no one looking for a heavy-duty truck is particularly concerned about fuel economy, there’s no reason to pay the extra fuel costs to haul around a bunch of excess weight that you’re not even using.

The Rugged AT4X

The AT4X trim marks one of the bigger differences between the two Sierra HD models. This rugged off-road trim is available on the Sierra 2500 HD but is not an option on the Sierra 3500 HD. Both models offer the base AT4 trim, which features recovery hooks, an off-road suspension package with twin-tube Rancho shocks to give you a smooth ride on bumpy ground, and skid plates to protect important underbody components from gravel, stray pebbles, mud, and other dangers you tend to run into when you leave paved roads behind. But only the three-quarter-ton version offers the upgraded AT4X.

While the AT4 is off-road capable, the AT4X has even more rugged equipment for adventurous drivers. It features Multimatic DSSV dampers to supplement the off-road suspension and a rear e-locking differential for extra traction when you need it. As mentioned earlier, it also features a factory lift that gives you extra ground clearance to avoid obstacles, and what you can’t glide over will have to deal with a larger steel transfer case skid plate and a front aluminum skid plate. While the AT4 comes standard with all-terrain tires, the AT4X features even beefier Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires that have a more aggressive tread designed to tackle tough terrain.

The AT4X also comes standard with more niceties than the AT4, including heated and ventilated 16-way power-adjustable front seats with a massage feature and a Bose 12-speaker premium surround sound system. A power sunroof brings in natural lighting and can give you a wider view of the natural world while you’re off-roading. Trailer tire pressure and temperature sensors help you keep track of your trailer in real-time, which can be extra important when driving on rough surfaces in rural areas.
