The more car brands change and merge and innovate, the more they stay the same. The GMC Terrain was first introduced for the 2010 model year, built on the history of the discontinued Pontiac Torrent. By using that base, GMC was able to create a compact crossover that stood out from the others in a crowded segment. Now, the 2021 Terrain continues to stand out from the group. Across the Terrain

The 2021 GMC Terrain comes in one of four trims: the SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL, the base trim, starts at around $26,000, which is a good starting point for a vehicle in this segment. The standard 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine generates 170 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. This engine brings a fair amount of power, especially for city driving. When properly equipped, you can tow up to 1,500 pounds. That’s enough to carry all your fun toys like a motorcycle or snowmobile or to take a Jet-Ski, a small boat, or some kayaks out on Normandy Lake or Tim’s Ford. The transmission is operated with a push-button system in the cabin, saving center console space and adding to the modern interior look.

One other benefit to the 2021 Terrain interior is the abundance of small storage, handy for chargers and meter money. Even the SL has finishes that are pleasing to the eye and the touch. While the Denali is clearly the more luxurious trim, the non-Denali trims have bright metallic-trimmed HVAC vents, bringing sparkle and modernity to the cabin. GMC’s standard active noise cancellation technology is another major perk of the Terrain. Active noise cancellation means that microphones hidden in the headliner detect road and engine noise and use the audio system to send out counteracting soundwaves. This is especially useful for balancing out when the engine is working harder on the highway, dampening those louder RPMs. An acoustically-laminated windshield also adds to a quieter ride.

The Terrain’s touch screen is bright and crisp. It’s a standard seven inches or eight inches on the SLT and the Denali. The infotainment system comes complete with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, along with two USB charging ports. All of the Terrains are 4G WiFi capable and include 12-volt power outlets upfront and in the cargo area. Speaking of the cargo area: it has nearly 30 cubic feet of space. When the rear seats are folded, it more than doubles to over 63.3 cubic feet of the cargo area. The legroom in the rear seats is nearly as spacious as in the front, at just under 40 inches.

Trim Luxuries

The Terrain SLE has the option to add a driver convenience package with remote start, a dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat complete with power lumbar control, and roof-mounted luggage rack side rails. Other options with the SLE include a 110-volt power outlet. Bumping up to the SLE also increases the dashboard driver information screen to 4.2 inches, and from the SLE up, you can choose to add a power sunroof.

The Terrain SLT starts with all of these perks and adds leather upholstery, standard, and an eight-inch touchscreen. The Terrain SLE and SLT have optional Elevation editions. The blacked-out Elevation Terrains have 19-inch aluminum wheels with a glossy black finish, a darkened front grille, and black GMC center caps and lettering, roof side rails, mirror caps, and model and trim exterior badging.

The Terrain SLT and the Denali include ambient lighting, one of those little luxuries you don’t appreciate ‘til you have it. It can take your everyday commute to a pleasure cruise. These trims also include heated exterior side mirrors and a hands-free power programmable power liftgate. While the SLT has the option of adding a Bose seven-speaker sound system, it’s standard on the Denali.

When it comes to the 2021 Terrain, the Denali has the largest of Terrain wheels at 19 inches. Other comforts include leather upholstery, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, parking sensors and LED headlights for additional safety, and a built-in navigation system. You can also add a comfort package with Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Parking Assist, ventilated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats.

Safety First

Even the Terrain SL has Automatic Emergency Braking included as standard. Other standard safety features on the Terrain are a Following Distance Indicator, a Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. Hill descent control is also an unexpectedly handy safety feature, as are a Teen Driver system, IntelliBeam Auto High Beam Assist, and GMC’s StabiliTrak, an upgraded form of traction control. Altogether, these safety features made the NHTSA give the 2021 Terrain five stars overall, its highest rating.

To make these alerts even more useful, you can choose to add a safety alert seat to the SLE and SLT; it’s standard on the Denali. A Rear Cross Traffic Alert is also available on the SLE and SLT and standard on the Denali. The SLE, SLT, and Denali have the option of Adaptive Cruise Control. The Denali has the option of a multiple camera system that can give you a digital bird’s eye look at your surroundings, complete with dynamic guidelines for maneuvering in tight parking lots or guiding your boat trailer down to Norman Lake. Rear Park Assist is available on the SLE and SLT. Front and Rear Park Assist are standard on the Denali, and if you’d like to take that a little further, Automatic Parking Assist is available.
