The 2022 Chevy Equinox and the 2022 Mazda CX-5 are close when it comes to price, with the 2022 Equinox starting at $25,800 and the 2022 CX-5 beginning at $25,900. With the two vehicles having such a slight difference in price, it’s good to go from there and look at features such as the performance capabilities of each vehicle to make sure you get the most bang for your buck.
You need a vehicle that can get you from Point A to Point B without wondering if it'll stall somewhere in the middle. The 1.5L Turbo engine gets the job done, giving the SUV towing power of up to 1,500lbs, a punchy 170 hp, and 203 lb-ft of torque, making this crossover not only tough but fun to drive, all while saving you a little at the pumps.
The Mazda CX-5 isn’t too shabby either, with a standard 2.5L engine that’s capable of towing up to 2,000 lbs and gives the vehicle 187 hp 186 lb-ft of torque. While all this looks good, it’ll cost you in gas mileage, with the CX-5 getting just 26 MPG combined. The Mazda does come standard with all-wheel drive, but it seems to fall a little short when it comes to fuel economy.
When it comes to the cargo room, it’s good to know that you have the space if you need it. The Equinox gives drivers and their passengers not only plenty of headroom and legroom but also ample cargo space at 29.9 cu.ft. in the back. This extends to a max cargo space of 63.9 cu.ft. with the rear seats folded down. So drivers of the Equinox know their SUV will be able to haul whatever they need, from groceries to camping equipment.
The Mazda, being a bit more compact, offers its drivers a similar rear cargo room of 29.1 cu.ft. However, it has slightly less total cargo space as folding down the rear seats only expands the total to 58.1 cu.ft. While that is a little less than the 2022 Equinox and may not be able to handle large furniture or hardware store purchases as well, drivers can likely count on Mazda's compact SUV for most daily hauling needs.
