If you are interested in the functionality and style of an SUV, but you need something that will not take over your life, then a small model can be a great choice. Over the past decade or two, these options have become increasingly popular, which means you have a lot of different models to choose from, and it can be difficult to find exactly the right one. Looking at just two and comparing what they offer makes things quite a bit easier, though a helpful salesperson can also assist with narrowing down your options. Considering the 2022 Chevy Equinox vs 2022 Ford Escape, for example, we can see that both have impressive features, but the Equinox gives you more at a lower starting price.

For example, both of these small SUVs have excellent starting engines, but you get more torque with the Equinox, and it starts at a significantly lower price. This may be why the Equinox has proven itself so popular in recent years, as it has significantly outsold its rival from Ford. While the Ford Escape was popular in the past, since 2018, the Chevy Equinox has been the clear leader between the two in sales year after year. Looking at everything the Equinox has to offer, this should be no surprise, and it is part of why we are so pleased to be able to offer this exciting model to our customers.

Inside the Chevy Equinox, you will find a wide range of impressive features and options, depending on what trim level you look at. Although both of these models have 8-inch infotainment displays available, the Equinox starts with a far larger display and a nicer infotainment system overall compared to the Escape. The Chevy Equinox also has an impressive selection of standard safety features, including Automatic Emergency Braking and a Forward Collision Alert, at a lower price than the Ford model. Perhaps most importantly, some features like Chevy's Teen Driver safety system are not even available on the Escape, making the Equinox the superior choice for a wide range of drivers.

  • Safety

    Impressive Safety Features

When you are behind the wheel, nothing is as important as the safety of you and all of your passengers. While careful driving is the most important thing you can do to protect everyone, you should also look for a vehicle that has impressive features designed to help keep you and your loved ones safe. Both the Chevy Equinox and the Ford Escape have impressive standard safety features, with even more available, but the Chevy model simply offers more.

Standard safety features on the Ford Escape include Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, along with a Forward Collision Warning and Pedestrian Detection. These are all great, and the Escape also comes with a Lane-Keeping System and automatic headlamps standard on every model. There are some additional options available, such as Active Park Assist, but even the standard features are very good––the Chevy just happens to go further.

    More Features Than Ford

With the 2022 Chevy Equinox, you get fantastic safety features on every model, even if you go with the standard trim. Every 2022 Equinox comes with a Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking, which can help you avoid a crash, plus Front Pedestrian Braking. You also get a Lane Keep Assist system with a Lane Departure Warning that helps you avoid drifting into other lanes. Perhaps best of all, of course, is that these fantastic features come at a lower starting price than the Ford Escape, plus you can choose available options like Automatic Parking Assist to make parking easier and safer.

If you have a young driver or someone soon to be a new driver, then Chevy's standard Teen Driver system is a must-have. It lets you customize certain vehicle settings to encourage safe driving and offers an in-vehicle report card to let you keep track of your teen's driving habits. Not only does this system help keep your young driver safe, but it makes it easier to know what areas to focus on as you teach the next generation of careful drivers.

  • Interior

    Standard Features

Since most of your time with your vehicle will be spent with you inside of it, while driving, you always want to carefully consider the interior of any model you are interested in. One important thing to remember, however, is that the interior features and options you find will depend a great deal upon the trim level you are looking at. Keep that in mind when shopping for a vehicle, and always look at the details of any particular model––including the trim and features––before you make any purchase.

The interior of the Ford Escape is fine, but the barebones options of the starting trim leave much to be desired. In some ways, the standard S trim of the Escape is not too bad as it has fairly comfortable seating and basic amenities that you would expect, like cup holders and vanity mirrors on the visors. One of the biggest flaws of the Ford Escape S, however, is that it has a very underwhelming entertainment system. The standard display is only 4.2 inches in size, and it comes with a simple AM/FM radio, lacking anything in the way of any streaming capability––higher trims include a real infotainment system, but the standard trim is decidedly subpar.

    Chevy Gives More

With the starting trim of the Chevy Equinox, you get a far superior interior in numerous ways, not the least of which is the infotainment system. The Equinox LS, the starting trim, comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen display, plus Chevy's Infotainment 3 System with great overall functionality. Not only do you get standard support for streaming technology, but the 2022 Equinox now comes standard with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto for compatible devices, making streaming your media even easier. Combine this with active noise cancellation and other great options, and you get a fantastic driving experience at a price that starts lower than the Escape, even though Ford's model is lacking by comparison.

  • Impressive Sales Records

    A Proven Track Record

As a car dealership, we cannot help but consider things like sales for vehicles as we look at what is out there and available to our customers. While sales records certainly are not the defining characteristic of any vehicle, they can still be a useful metric by which to judge what model might be best for you. With that in mind, the Chevy Equinox has been outselling the Ford Escape for the last four years and shows no signs of slowing down.

To be completely fair to the Escape, it sold more models than the Equinox back in 2017, which makes sense because that was when the Chevy model was at the end of its previous generation. However, the all-new third-generation Equinox that launched for the 2018 model year features fantastic new options and improvements that made it an immediate success and established it as one of the leading options for a small crossover SUV on the market. Of course, you do not have to simply take our word for it, as you can look at the sales numbers for yourself:

    Chevy Equinox Sales Figures:

    • 2018 – 332,621
    • 2019 – 346,049
    • 2020 – 270,994
    • 2021 – 165,325

    Ford Escape Sales Figures:

    • 2018 – 272,228
    • 2019 – 241,387
    • 2020 – 178,495
    • 2021 – 145,415

The dip in sales for both models in 2020 and 2021 was due to supply issues from the pandemic and the chip shortage that has followed it, but you can still see the trend is clear. While the Ford Escape is a fine SUV that has sold decently, it simply cannot keep up with what the Chevy Equinox has to offer, and sales illustrate that perfectly. Just in 2019, the Equinox sold over 100,000 vehicles more than Ford's model, and nearly did so again the following year. We think it is time you see for yourself why so many people have chosen Chevy.
