The History of Chevy Trucks

Chevy has always made great trucks, but the sleek and luxury pickups you see today are a far cry from where things started. It all began back in 1918 when Chevy put out the One-Ton, its first purpose-built truck. The brand moved on to light delivery trucks in the 1920s, and by 1938, we got the Chevy Half-Ton. We also started to see a design that would be the earliest nod to modern pickups as we know them.

In 1947, Chevy launched the 3100 Series, which featured an innovative wider cabin that allowed for a three-person bench seat, a round profile, and a unique grill. This was the first of the Advance Design Series. By 1955, the Cameo Carrier would appear as part of the Task Force Series. It felt and looked more like a passenger car with its comfortable luxury interior.

The year 1960 brought us the iconic C/K Series trucks. They boasted a dynamic line of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engine options and were the backbone of the Chevy truck lineup for over 40 years. In 1988, we saw the start of the fourth and final generation of the C/K Series. It was the first Chevy to introduce the Insta-Trac system, which allowed drivers to switch in and out of four-wheel drive on the fly.

In 1999, the popular Silverado trim of the C/K Series would become its own model with the launch of the Silverado 1500. Since then, we’ve seen Chevy focus heavily on the Silverado series, adding more capable engine options, upgrading the interior, adding better infotainment, and constantly improving the aerodynamics without sacrificing power.

The Chevy Colorado

The Chevy Silverado is the foundation of the current Chevy truck lineup, but the Chevy Colorado also deserves your attention. While the Silverado is a full-size pickup, the Colorado is a midsize model and a good choice for Tennessee drivers seeking something a bit more compact.

The Colorado has been around since 2004 and Chevrolet has consistently improved upon it. The first Colorado was intended to replace the S-10 pickup. It was available with either a 175 hp 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine or a 220 hp 3.5-liter five-cylinder engine. Larger engines came out in 2007 and 2009, with the most powerful option being a 300 hp 5.3-liter V8.

Chevrolet briefly paused production of the Colorado for 2013 and 2014, but the midsize truck came back just in time in 2015 when there was a low supply of small pickups. It returned to the market with a fresher look and slightly larger build than the first generation. It also came with two bed options and was available in extended cab and crew cab configurations.

The year 2016 saw the introduction of a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine for the Colorado, and in 2017, the off-road-ready ZR2 trim was added. Since then, Chevy has continued to make advancements in power, infotainment, and luxury features.

The Chevy Silverado 1500

First released in 1999, the Silverado 1500 served as a replacement for the C/K Series––of which it was once just a trim. The first generation ran from 1999 to 2006. It featured three cab styles, three cargo bed sizes, and three engine options, making it a versatile truck that was appropriate for drivers with a range of hauling needs.

The second generation Silverado 1500 ran from 2007 to 2013. During this time, we saw the addition of more trim levels, along with new safety and driver assist features. Chevy added an improved suspension and more engine options for the third generation, which was produced from 2014 to 2018. The cabin also started to take on a more luxurious look and feel.

The fourth generation, which launched in 2019, saw Chevy return its focus to the workhorse roots of this truck. We saw improvements to the performance and aerodynamics thanks to a lighter body and heftier engine options. In fact, we saw the addition of a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Updates to the current generation have brought more luxury features for the interior, more advanced infotainment, and of course, the introduction of the off-road-ready ZR2 trim.

The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD & 3500 HD

In 2001, Chevy realized some drivers needed a more powerful truck than the Silverado 1500, so it released the Silverado 2500 HD and Silverado 3500 HD. These three-quarter-ton and one-ton models boasted much higher payload and towing capacities than the Silverado 1500. The first generation Silverado 2500 HD and Silverado 3500 HD ran from 2001 to 2006 and introduced powerful new engines like the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel and the 8.1-liter Vortec V8.

For the second generation, which lasted from 2007 to 2014, we saw more luxury features like heated leather seats and standard satellite radio. The third-generation Silverado 2500 HD and Silverado 3500 HD ran from 2015 to 2019 before being replaced by the current fourth-generation model. We’ve seen the addition of On-Star, Wi-Fi, and more advanced infotainment over the years, along with driver-assist features and specialized trailering technology.
