The Chevy Traverse Enters a New Generation

Recently, we’ve noticed our customers have been thrilled with what the Traverse—a midsize SUV—has been able to offer them. As the 2024 model is now being released and ushering in a new and exciting generation of the Traverse, we wanted to take the time to walk you through the differences between the 2023 and 2024 models so you can have a sense of which one you might want to purchase or lease and why so many of us are eager to get behind the 2024’s model.

Who Is Served Well by the Traverse?

Before discussing the differences between the models, we should take a minute to look at who the Traverse aims to serve. It might sound like cheating if we say “everyone,” but that’s increasingly the case. From those who commute to Nashville, to adventurers who go to the mountains for hiking, to those with a family, the Traverse has a lot to offer. But let’s concentrate a bit on families as we think the Traverse is an especially good fit for drivers with children.

Families love the Traverse because it has three rows of seating, which means eight people can sit in it comfortably. This SUV has earned a reputation for spaciousness; when we say it can seat eight, we mean it. No one will feel cramped or awkward no matter where they sit. The Traverse has historically been able to tow a lot for an SUV, which lets you and your loved ones take along plenty of luggage when it’s time to take a trek across Tennessee or even further.

Power and Capability in Your Traverse

A midsize SUV should have some solid pep in its step, and the Traverse has just that. The 2024 model adds some extra power with a new 2.5L, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that produces up to 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque. These solid ratings result in fantastic acceleration—0-60 in seven seconds—so you don’t get trapped on a highway entrance ramp. You’ll have a smooth ride at high speeds, so you never feel like the engine is coughing when you’re roaring down I-24. Instead, you’ll easily be able to beat the crowd no matter what your destination is. Better yet, this upgraded engine gives you stellar towing capability so that you can bring your camper to Bark Camp Barrens or wherever your outdoor adventure lies. If you opt for the towing package on the 2024 Traverse, you can hitch a trailer that weighs up to 5,000 lbs.

The 2023 Traverse had some power, too, but the new generation of the Traverse definitely wins out. The 2023 Traverse had a 3.6L V6 engine that produced 310 hp. It still manages to tow 5,000 lbs, so its capability remains solid, but it won’t do it as smoothly as the 2024 model will with that model’s upgraded engine. Both versions of the Traverse can easily compete with other SUVs in the midsize class, though.

Cargo Room Galore

SUVs originally caught on because of the extra space they offered. However, some manufacturers began to sacrifice space for a more stylish design. Excited buyers soon became disappointed buyers when they discovered a week-long vacation they planned required more room than their SUV provided. That’s never been the case with the Traverse, though. It’s consistently managed to preserve space and style.

Both the 2024 and 2023 Traverse offer a best-in-class 98 cu.ft. of space with the rear rows down. You’ll have no trouble loading in gear for camping in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area or storing luggage so you can visit the parents for a week or two down in Florida. The 2024 Traverse, though, comes with some exciting new touches the 2023 model doesn’t have since it is ushering in a new generation. For instance, the Smart Sense Liftgate means the rear opens without you having to use your keys. It senses your presence and pops open so you can access the back cargo space, even when your hands are full.

Both the 2023 and 2024 Traverses contain cubbies and storage containers so you can place smaller objects in safe locations, making sure they don’t get lost in your vehicle and keeping them out of sight.

Technology Gets an Upgrade

The 2023 Traverse already came with some great technology. Its eight-inch diagonal touchscreen offered both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so that you could link your phone right to your SUV and enjoy playlists and podcasts while you commuted to Nashville or took a trip with friends and family. It provided enhanced voice recognition so you could use your apps without taking your eyes off the road and use the available navigation system so that traveling around Tennessee was easy and never a hassle; when traffic hit, you could chart a new course.

But the 2024 Traverse truly takes tech to the next level. It arrives with a crystal clear, HD, best-in-class 17.7-inch color touchscreen, so you will have no problem using apps or navigation features. It will provide you with on-demand vehicle diagnostics, so you know how your Traverse is at all times and can have any problems immediately addressed. It comes with Chevy Safety Assist. Despite all this tech, the 2024 Traverse still comes with some tactile controls, so for those of you who prefer operating volume and climate by knob instead of touchscreen, you’ll be happy with your vehicle.

A New Trim for a New Lifestyle

One area where the 2023 Traverse and 2024 Traverse cannot be compared is the Z71 trim, which is new to the 2024 model. Chevy created this trim to add a more adventurous nature to the Traverse, which was lacking in previous models. The results speak for themselves. The Z71 trim comes with features that will make off-roading a blast. There won’t be any part of Tennessee you can’t conquer with this trim. It debuts with a suspension specifically geared for off-roading so your vehicle can handle the bumps on the trail. Its all-wheel drive comes with a twin-clutch so that you have excellent command over your SUV, letting you navigate different terrains with ease. The Z71 arrives with trailering equipment, so you can bring along whatever you need for your journey, and the 18-inch all-terrain tires will give you enough traction as the road turns rough. The extra tech that comes with this trim, such as Hill Descent Control, will make an adventurer out of everyone.
